At the regular meeting last Friday the fire department voted in two new members and set a cap of fifteen trained firefighters. Bert Black becomes assistant chief replacing Will Holdcroft who moved to LaPlata Missouri. Regular members listed include H. Thomas B. Black Chas Ables A. Barker James Taylor Alfred Johnson F. E. Farr James McKinley E. K. Pitman F Gulmsee O. E. Mendenhall AY. Lierke A. D. McGuire Hugh Crawford B. Ables. Members risk removal after three missed meetings. meetings held last Friday each month at 7 30 p m weather permitting work to begin soon with hopes of a good company in months.
A daughter was born on Sunday February 25 to Mr and Mrs Ed Grims Jey. The family resides three and a half miles southwest of town.
W P Allred of Corydon announces candidacy for Wayne County Representative in the upcoming nominating vote this summer. An respected county citizen and former county recorder, he served four years in that office with credit. An old soldier, he has lived on farms in Walnut township and near Corydon, and would represent the county in the best possible manner.
A Christmas Eve and Day performance by King Perkins Company last Saturday drew praise for touching scenes and moral lessons. The ten member troupe, led by Mr and Mrs King and child performer Little Frank King, featured three generations and faced poor road conditions that limited attendance. A return date was arranged despite heavy guarantees, with Friday March 30 slated for another show.
The Republican state convention will feature 1,639 delegates, near the Cedar Rapids event’s size five years ago. In the Eighth District, Adams 10, Appanoose 19, Clarke 10, Decatur 13, Fremont 12, Lucas 12, Page 18, Ringgold 12, Taylor 14, Union 14, Wayne 12. The Pella Chronicle reports a Dutch family nearby noted for height, with sons 6 ft 8 in and 6 ft 4 in, daughters 6 ft 1 in and 6 ft 2 in, another family with three to four members above 6 ft 6 in, and a daughter 6 ft 5 in.
The Iowa house of representatives passed a bill prohibiting sale or use of dynamite firecrackers caps cap pistols toy cannons or firecrackers over three and one third inches long or three eighths of an inch in diameter. A fine and imprisonment are provided. The measure seems likely to advance to the senate and become law.

He urges getting out to enjoy sun and birds and to sharpen lawn tools despite the groundhog's poor showing this year.
An advertisement extols shopping at The Two Macs offering groceries and pantry items. It highlights prices such as best corn three cans for 25 cents, salmon at 20 or 15, and shrimp, spinach, and pineapple with low pricing, urging readers to try B. and M. flour as well.
The daily papers last week stated that President Roosevelt had appointed A. D. McCulloch postmaster at Humestun. The appointment will no doubt soon be confirmed by the senate. It is not known just when Mr. McCulloch will succeed Mr. Berry, but probably about the first of April.
Thursday of last week Frank McKkibben entered his store through the back door and fell, striking his head on the ban and sustaining a severe gash on the left forehead. Smith was summoned and gave two stitches to close the wound.
A large turnout at the town hall last Saturday elected James L. Berry chair and Bert Blick secretary for a town convention. The Peoples' Ticket named includes mayor J. E. Doze clerk J. L. Taylor treasurer B. King councilmen D. R. Kunkel A. Humeston assessor Sylvester Collins park commissioner W. E. Crawford. The caucus was the largest ever held in Humeston.
Street Commissioner Black endorses spreading ashes and especially cinders from coal stoves onto streets. He asserts that if cinders from every house were laid on streets for five to six years it would create a solid road. Remember to place your cinders where they will help build the road.
Citizens across Wayne Lucas Clarke and Decatur counties voiced strong support for a district fair at Humes ton. The paper argued the venture would succeed and urged continued interest until concrete plans and action are made. The idea was deemed worthy of careful consideration with widespread backing expected.
Dr McCuiloch has introduced a bill in the House addressing fire insurance. It requires insured property within fifty feet of another to file with the local clerk the policy amount and description, with council review to adjust overvalued cover. If insurer does not reduce, the insurer pays. excess over three fourths goes to the school fund. insured recovers three fourths of actual value.
McMains and Johnson auctioneers announce a public sale of 130 head of draft horses at Derby on March 2. The dealers note the sale as one of their biggest and best with a history of successful horse sales.
