Governor George W. Clarke proclaims February 28 to March 4 as seed corn week. He urges farmers to thoroughly test seed corn and asks bankers merchants and business leaders to help secure good home grown seed for their localities. The proclamation stresses testing each ear and choosing seed with strong germination to bolster the 1915 crop prospects.
Sixteen members of Chappaqua lodge No. 121 1 C O F attended a Derby lodge session Thursday evening. They performed first and second degree work, followed by a supper. Derby hosts gave a warm welcome. Attendees included W. Lewis, Henry Middlebrook, W F Leech, F L Bibby, J P Gunzenhauser, N Kipper, M W Smith, Lloyd Gibbs, A H Palmer, A P Bloemsma, James Smith, Harvey Porter, H E Lewis, Steve Norton, C W Fisher, George McCart, J L Yates, Albert Yates.
The McCulloch and Zinn sale in Wayne county drew a large crowd with lively bidding. Cows sold from 65 to 120, a yearling ball brought 107.50, late spring calves 10, and about 1400 bushels of corn moved at 87 cents. Seed corn averaged 2.75. Auctioneers J Hasbrouck and C V Webb maintained steady pace. The sale total reached about 8600.
Garden Grove high school defeated the local team in a close game at the Bijou on Friday evening. The final score was 17 to 12. Starting lineup included Garden Grove players McDowell Lewis and Norris as forwards, Young at center, Lane and French as guards, with subs Hameston Harold Carlton Oscar Dennis. Will Yates served as captain at center with Alva Eaton and Theo Taylor as guards. Hugh Carlton Cecil McRae and Thomas Lewie appeared as subs.
Jupiter and Venus form a striking evening tableau as they drift apart. The pair remains a remarkable and interesting sight in the heavens tonight.
C L Hart the clothier has installed a handsome wall hat cabinet, latest pattern from Grand Rapids Show Case Co. The oak cabinet, with glass front and center display, stores Hart and cap stock and enhances Humeston's shop. Hart is a progressive merchant, aiming to give patrons the best service.
Auction notices appear weekly with advertisers such as Jesse Ratcliffe on Friday February 25 R. C. Barger on Saturday February 26 and J. L. Irwin on Monday February 28 in The New Era.
W L Morey junior member of George O Gardner & Co has sold his interest in the store to Mr Gardner. He will take up farm life about April first, buying land near Pleasanton and renting his father's farm. Mr and Mrs Morey are pleasant young people and the New Era regrets their departure from Humeston and wishes them success in the new undertaking.
Mrs. F. P. Heskett and Miss Marie Rinard returned from Quincy Illinois where they spent the week in wholesale millinery houses selecting new spring and summer merchandise for Mrs. Heskett store. She expects to display the finest line of stylish millinery ever shown in Humeston and to make interesting announcements in the New Era from week to week.
Des Moines area farm implement dealers announced price increases of five to ten percent for machinery as steel costs rise. Plows barrows planters and other steel dependent items rose about one percent by most dealers.
Chariton Leader predicts J. E. Doze of Humeston as the probable Democratic nominee for the state senate in this district. If Karl Le Compte of Corydon runs for the Republicans he could energize the campaign with a jab about opposing Doze while the harvest outcome remains uncertain.
W. B. Barney dairy and food commissioner announces that after May 1 the sale of fractional strength lemon extract in Juwa will be prohibited. The ruling targets fractional strength products because they can be used to illicitly intoxicate liquor.
The state census bureau reports a six per cent population gain for Towa since the 1910 federal census. The new census totals 2,368,062 residents, reflecting growth across the state.
State hospital Clarinda counts 1215 patients with over 700 men. Seymour chautauqua set for August 12 to 18 with Red path Vawter Circuit talent. Iowa GOP hopes for Darrah renomination. J Lobr of Clay township describes a Belgian mare colt weighing 40 pounds at seven months now about nine months old with flesh gained recently. Austin Smith reports an eight month old shire mare colt weighing 900 pounds with extra quality.
The Creston conference of Eighth district Republicans endorsed Senator A. B. Cummins for the presidency. Delegates J. R. Bowsher and H. F. Tomlinson were named to the national convention, with Kenneth Davenport proposing a contingency if Cummins falters. The body, led by Captain Brown and M. W. Campbell, stated delegates should recognize Cummins as the sole candidate. Alternate delegates Earl Ferguson and Senator Dan Turner were chosen, with broad county representation and firm financial backing pledged.
Homesten people attended Des Moines seventh annual automobile show at the Coliseum last week. L. K. Doze called it the greatest success of any show he ever saw. Many fine exhibits and a large, keen attendance. Local attendees included A. D. McCulloch P. G. Ratcliffe B. F. Garton W. F. Leech J. S. McKnight P. H. McKnight L. K. Poze Glen Newell J. E. Dove P. Lon Latimer visited town Saturday for the first time in two months after falling on December 18 and breaking his hip. The severe injury kept him confined to home, but friends report she is recovering and currently able to be out and around.
J. H. Wells and his children visited over Banday with his sister Mrs. IE Hutchinson at Leon. The brief personal notice records a family gathering and travel details tied to the Wells and Hutchinson households.
Washington dispatch reports Judge Towner secured passage of a claim bill granting the Court of Claims jurisdiction to hear Ellis P. Garton as administrator of the estate of H. B. Garton. The Gartons, residents of Wayne County Iowa, were killed by Sioux after leaving Alkali station Nebraska. Claims arising from the murder have long been pending with new supporting facts found in Denver.
Corrdon Democrat notes rising numbers of raccoon hides bought by Nickels & Son in Wayne County. Everman Bros. of Cambria led with eleven hides and a $32 check. George Todd and Earl Stiner added seven raccoon skins while rabbit hunting last Friday. Skunk pelts also provide good pay to trappers.
Bert Van Derlingen, who conducted a closing out sale Thursday, will move to Pella in March. He has rented his 239 acre farm to his half brother John Van Helten of Pella. The Van Derlingens reside in Richman township and plan to settle back in Pella. he expects to engage in business.
Word from Indianola reports Bert Evans, formerly a Humeston student, won first over forty in the Indianola high school declamatory contest. Bert is praised as a bright boy with exceptional oratorical ability, and friends rejoice at his splendid success.
A correction states J A Irwin bought the Rev J Milton Whisler residence, not J B Whisler’s property, for 2400 dollars. Whisler received Mr Irwin's two lots valued at 600 dollars in the deal. J B Whisler owns a fine property and did not sell.
Fr Leech received 115 eggs from 11 chickens in January as 16 hens and 21 pullets of Barred rock lay well through winter. He says the flock’s average is favorable compared with other records in this paper and notes steady production.
Mrs Bottomly, a style expert in the New Era, advises feminine readers to plan spring clothing. She highlights Faster hat models and a lovely party gown, noting that coquettish mores are reappearing in fashion.
Leo Crew will represent Humeston High School in the declamatory contest at Allerton Friday evening. Several county high schools will be represented in the competition.
Allerton News praises Prof. Lyon for elevating the school, calling him the right man in the right place and highlighting his role in making it among the best in the area.
Seventy or more Iowa farm youths aged fifteen to nineteen may visit the 1916 Town State fair free of charge and camp on grounds with ninety eight other county representatives. The annual encampment honors the essay winners of the State Fair Association with the topic How Good Roads Will Benefit The Iowa Farmer and entries must be submitted to county superintendent Jennie L. Chirk before April 1. All farmer boys are eligible whether in town school or farm.
Dictation exercise lists common misspellings from a paragraph about calendars principals and grammar. The niece removes calendars to relieve her uncle and believes instruction in grammar becomes necessary according to The American Boy publication.
Humeston defeated Ellston 62 to 25 in basketball on Ellston's court Thursday. The first half ended 25 to 13. Humeston's fast, clever lineup overwhelmed Ellston, which played men from Tingley and Beaconsfield. Humeston lineup included Walter Lewis center Lester Hasbrouck Harry Thomas forwards Wilbur Kipper Daryl Gardner guards Willard Canfield sub Leo Thomas referee.
In a special election in Leon last week the Leon Electric company was granted a new twenty five year franchise. The award mirrors the prior franchise. The deal closed with David G. Fisher & Co. of Davenport purchasing the entire Leon plant and holdings.
A 2 year old Iowa act bars using the U.S. or Iowa flags in ads with fines up to 100 dollars or 30 days imprisonment. The law bans any drawing of the flags and includes national ensigns in advertisements as prohibited.
Albert R. Nicholson of Monroe township announces his candidacy for county auditor on the Republican ticket. He previously lived in Seymour for fifteen years and has spent the last six on a farm.
