A group of farmers gathered at Humeston Community Center on a Friday afternoon to learn about the Conservation Reserve and Iowan 2000 programs. Dave White of the Soil Conservation Service assisted participants with details and guidance.
Wayne County Sheriff Jerry Street plans to resign effective April 4 after five years in office to take a theft and arson investigator role with Allied Group in Southern Iowa and Northern Missouri. He cites pay as the main reason, noting Adams and Union counties face staffing and legal challenges. Street backs Deputy Vernon Brown as successor. board of supervisors to appoint.
The Humeston Commercial Club, led by president Lee Spensler, plans a spring tree planting drive with Joe Moore and Kenneth Surbaugh overseeing. Trees will be distributed as bare root or seedling stock with 6 to 8 foot potted trees at 12.50 each, featuring pin oaks and red maples from a species list. An ad for a school bond issue and ideas to improve brick walls via sandblasting were also discussed.
The Neighbor to Neighbor program, led by Wayne County Ministerial Association clergy and laity, begins visits to farm families to share support during rural crisis. Lynn Roberts, 41, of Plano, was seriously but stable in Des Moines after being accidentally shot by Wayne County deputy Raymond Griswold at his residence Thursday evening. Roberts, a reserve deputy not on duty, was hit in the lower abdomen and transported to Iowa Methodist Hospital after initial care at Wayne County Hospital. The incident, reported at 8:35 p.m., is under investigation. Griswold’s duties were ended as the sheriff offered resignation or dismissal.
Representatives Dana Larson Rouble and Associates showed a slide set to the Mormon Trail schoolhouse building committee in Humeston. About 50 people attended. The proposed metal and masonry building would surround a media center with library facilities and classrooms larger than present ones. Five tentative sites were named, including one near the current grounds. If the bond issue passes March 25, voters will face three questions: authorize 2,690,000 in bonds, raise the levy to 4.05 per thousand, and a size question decided by a simple majority.
Funeral services for Keiffer Garton 80 are set for Wednesday at 1 30 P M at Hutchinsons Funeral Home Humeston. He died Monday morning at Decatur County Hospital Leon. Survivors include two sons Keiffer Garton Jr Washington and Howard West Bend 10 grandchildren and a sister Mardelle Southard of Humeston. An obituary will appear next week.
