The 108th regiment of Company D, part of the Rainbow Division, suffered heavy casualties on the Western Front during intense fighting. Of the 3,602 men, 437 were killed, 191 died of wounds, 40 missing, and five captured, with many maimed for life.
Chariton Leader reports William Cullinson selected to fill the vacancy on the State Highway Commission after H C Beard's resignation to become Assistant United States Attorney. The appointment, to be accepted by Cullinson, carries time consuming duties and requires careful handling of duties.
Ethel Bowman daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Bowman south of Corydon wed Oliver Porter a Wayne County lad who recently returned from overseas duty in England. Local friends extend best wishes and hearty congratulations.
Roy Lawson was taken to M. F. E. hospital in Des Moines for an appendicitis operation on Monday. He was accompanied by Dr. Geo. McCulloch and Ed Brown who returned home Sunday.
LeCompte introduces a bill to amend law relating to the powers and duties of town trustees, with reference to cemeteries. The measure, noted by Senator Kari, was brought forward in the senate.

Private Henry T. Roberts arrived home with an honorable discharge after service at Camp Dodge since September 5. Sergeant Earl Moser, discharged from Camp Dodge, is home after eighteen months in the engineering corps at Camp Cody. Sergt. L K Doze Pvt Walter Woodrad Pvt Will Rees and Pvt Leslie G Roller also returned from overseas to receive honorable discharges at Camp Dodge. Friends express happiness at their homecoming.
The Humeston band fed eighteen members of the WUnele Sammy Minstrel Co. a chicken pie supper at the Christi church on Wednesday. The Beal Cra served the meal and the local band boys covered the expenses. The regular January teachers examination was held at the court house Wednesday through Friday. Thirteen teachers wrote examinations. three sought a new certificate while ten aimed to raise grades or renew certificates. Hameton participants included Feen Williams, Mary Foster, Fay Williams and Helen Richards.
