SWCC Grant to Honor Creston Elk Memorial Scholar
Southwestern Community College will offer a $500 scholarship next fall through the Creston Elks in memory of Lil Dave Nelson. Eligible applicants are Area XIV students attending Southwestern next fall, with forms due March 14 to Southwestern’s Financial Aid Office. Tjaden Named Elementary Principal for Mormon Trail
Gerald Tjaden Jr. accepted the elementary principal position for Mormon Trail schools and began duties February 3. A Wartburg College graduate, he taught fifth grade at Fremont for five years and earned a Master’s from UNI. He and wife Carol have two children and plan to move into the district soon.

ISU rate bid blasted as excessive by consumer advocates
The Iowa Office of Consumer Advocate argues Iowa Southern Utility's proposed 15.9 million dollar electric rate increase is excessive and asks the Iowa State Commerce Commission to cut about 11.2 million. The OCA seeks lower returns for stockholders and disallows wage tax adjustments and certain expenses. The case dates to 1985 with interim rates set and a 5 million reduction ordered previously.

District Court Dismissal Motions and Receiver Appointed
In Chariton district court National Bank and Trust seeks dismissal with prejudice in a case against Wayne County farmers Courtney and Marjorie Siglin. The long dispute, begun in 1984 over a promissory note and other debts, included counterclaims for $1 million and a jury trial fight, with multiple judge rulings and a receivership appointment for Don Russell of New Virginia. The Siglins later dismissed their district court counterclaim with prejudice and judges handed a separate default judgment in a Seymour case against Marvin and Thomas Swan.
