Victor Neal of Garden Grove received the Silver Beaver Award at the Mid-Iowa council banquet in Drake University's Olmstead Center. The honor recognizes long term service to scouting and community. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Doug Thiel and Mr. and Mrs. Don Richard.
Southwestern Community College will offer a $500 scholarship next fall through the Creston Elks in memory of Lil Dave Nelson. Eligible applicants are Area XIV students attending Southwestern next fall, with forms due March 14 to Southwestern’s Financial Aid Office. Nelson was a Creston Elks chair officer and a well known local community figure.
The Humeston community calendar lists activities from February 5 to February 14. Thelma Johnson hosts Brevity Club. events include Kool Kids for Christ, Easter cantata practice, Senior citizens dinner, basketball games, Masons soup supper, a school board meeting, UMW meeting, driver license examiners, choir practice, and a Valentine dance with multiple schools noted.
Free distribution of processed cheese butter and corn meal scheduled February 13 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Corydon. In Wayne County, 4500 pounds cheese 1760 pounds butter 4000 pounds corn meal arrive. Eligibility based on gross income with annualization for self employed. households 1-5 get five pounds cheese and corn meal plus one pound butter per member up to four pounds per household. households six or more get 10 pounds cheese and 10 pounds corn meal. Republican State Representative Horace Daggett of Kent announces his bid for reelection to the 92nd house district which spans the south two-thirds of Adams County all of Decatur Ringgold and Taylor counties. Daggett, in his seventh term, is ranking member of the education committee and also serves on ways and means state government and local government panels.
A public hearing on rising liability insurance costs is scheduled for Monday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in room 180 at Southwestern Community College in Creston. State Representative Horace Daggett notes premiums have increased, with some policies being canceled. Testimony is invited. each presenter may speak five minutes and provide a written copy of their testimony.
The Mormon Trail kindergarten class sponsors a bake sale February 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at Citizens State Bank Humeston to aid Mark Ripperger injured in a recent automobile accident. Proceeds help with home equipment once he leaves hospital. For information call Joyce Norris at 877-8801.
Humeston firemen answered a Saturday call to Everett Wrights residence near the Highways 2 and 65 junction. A trash fire spread into tall grass beside a fence but was put out with no damage.
A $1000 scholarship from the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church honors Rev. Lucille Ringle. Open to active church members pursuing study at accredited colleges, with GPA 2.0 required. Applications due May 1, 1986, via Iowa Methodist Foundation. Also notes a Feb 3 one car crash injuring three Mormon Trail youths nearby.
Gerald Tjaden Jr. accepted the elementary principal position for Mormon Trail schools and began duties February 3. A Wartburg College graduate, he taught fifth grade at Fremont for five years and earned a Master’s from UNI. He and wife Carol have two children and plan to move into the district soon.
The Iowa Office of Consumer Advocate argues Iowa Southern Utility's proposed 15.9 million dollar electric rate increase is excessive and asks the Iowa State Commerce Commission to cut about 11.2 million. The OCA seeks lower returns for stockholders and disallows wage tax adjustments and certain expenses. The case dates to 1985 with interim rates set and a 5 million reduction ordered previously.
The Easter Seals Society aims to raise 860 this February with Wayne County donations totaling 818 in 1985. Services to residents cost 2005, including in home care and equipment. 22 convalescent loans cost 1186. one resident stayed a week at Camp Sunnyside for 458. County income 818 from 1985 campaign plus 66 fees and 752, with mail solicitation planned. Contribs may be mailed to Alice Prugh Corydon or left at Corydon State Bank. Judy Annis is county rep, Hugh Doty campaign chair.
In Chariton district court National Bank and Trust seeks dismissal with prejudice in a case against Wayne County farmers Courtney and Marjorie Siglin. The long dispute, begun in 1984 over a promissory note and other debts, included counterclaims for $1 million and a jury trial fight, with multiple judge rulings and a receivership appointment for Don Russell of New Virginia. The Siglins later dismissed their district court counterclaim with prejudice and judges handed a separate default judgment in a Seymour case against Marvin and Thomas Swan.
