Christmas Day in Humeston Brings Joy and Cold Weather

Residents celebrated a merry Christmas with family meals and church entertainments while a brutal cold snap followed. Snow covered the ground, temperatures dropped to 18 below, and rural mail carriers faced heavy loads due to parcel post deliveries. Local households hosted gatherings with the Gordiner Bros. Stock Co. and schools held festive programs.

Holstein cattle sale nets over seven thousand dollars

A Tuesday sale at Roth Brothers Town Diary farm west of Ottumwa drew bids totaling over $7,000. A. Hazen of Humeston paid the top price of $190 for a full blood Holstein, with Humeston and New London receiving the heaviest consignments. Grade cows averaged $100, top bids $125 from T. W. Walters of Agency.

Bibby & Gunzenhauser Hold Successful Closing Sale

The closing out sale by Bibby and Gunzenhauser drew strong demand for cattle and grain. The top cattle brought 80 dollars, a yearling heifer 75, a spring half 44, and corn sold for 62 cents.

Liberty Oil to Establish Des Moines Run Distributing Point

Liberty Oil Co of Des Moines will make Humeston a distributing point for its products. A building will be erected south of the Burlington tracks opposite the Standard Oil station. Tanks are being installed this week. H E Fisher becomes local agent for Liberty Oil Co. The station will be supervised by A Rinkler of Humeston, traveling salesman for the company.
