National Army List Exceeds County Draft Quota in Wayne

The Wayne County draft board lists 167 men for national army service, 19 over quota, with few likely to gain vocational exemptions. Provost Crowder sets entrainment dates for 687,000 troops: 30 percent September 5, 30 percent September 9, 30 percent October 3, last 10 percent later in October. The certified list names numerous residents across Allerton, Corydon, Humeston, Lineville, Seymour, Promise City, Clio, and other towns, including aliens and enlisted men, with locations and names such as Adolph Lewis Gibbs, Fred Ray Cain, William Harrison Parker, and many others.

Corydon Youth Killed in Storm Near Weldon

Oscar Harrison aged sixteen, son of William Harrison of Corydon, was killed during a lightning storm while herding sheep east of Weldon. Dr. John R. Walker of Fort Madison, now an army captain, is to report to Fort Riley before deployment to France. The 63rd Iowa State Fair opens in Des Moines with ten days of exhibits and entertainment, drawing Humeston residents who praised the performances of Director Humeston and his band during a busy Saturday night town gathering.

Half Million Auto Fund Allocations Announced

State Treasurer E H Hoyt announced the auto fund apportioned to counties for April 1 to August 1 totaling 479,959. Under the road law funds are set aside to match federal aid, with 463,536.50 reserved for the program and 30,000 allocated to engineering. The August distribution allocates 290 to each township, with Wayne County receiving 4,640.

Dr. McCoy Honored as National Knights Leader

Postmaster J N McCoy of Corydon was elected supreme representative of the grand lodge Knights of Pythias at Des Moines meeting last week He will represent Town Pythians at the national convention for a four year term McCoy previously served as grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of Iowa.

Iowa's Youngest Soldier From Wayne County

Corydon Democrat notes Lawrence Crowley born May 26, 1902 is the youngest US soldier. At fifteen years and three months he serves from Wayne County and is stationed at Fort Logan Colorado.
