Orr High students ship Christmas gifts to Viet Nam servicemen

About a dozen large cartons filled with Christmas packages were sent by Orr High School students at 1040 N. Keeler through the student council. The project raised $150 and many items for service members, organized by the council’s human relations committee with Mrs. Darlene Stahl as sponsor.

Auto Theft: the Toughest Nut for Police to Crack

West-Northwest Side police districts use crime pattern areas to target burglaries robberies and muggings but auto theft remains the hardest crime. Commanders Thanasouras McNulty and Sims note that 35 to 50 felons are weekly sent to state prison yet many keep stealing cars. Juveniles account for over half and many call it a prank. Police chief Conlisk says auto theft is a criminal offense not a prank. Ten minutes each car is reported stolen according to radio dispatch cards.

Redmond Report lauded by district leaders in Austin

The Redmond report outlining short and long range plans for Chicago Public Schools is praised as among the finest. Dr. George W. Connelly, newly appointed associate superintendent of the West-Northwest Side district, spoke at Focus on Austin, praising the document and noting progress while warning many proposals will take time. The forum series continues with a Thursday session featuring Deputy Chief Samuel W. Nolan on easing city tensions at North Austin Lutheran church.

Logan Y Pool campaign hits $450000 goal target

Logan Square YMCA campaign on track with a $450 000 goal for a community family swimming pool. About $100 000 has been pledged by industrial contributors as the door to door $1 solicitation raised awareness rather than large sums. Family Service Center Meeting At Y On Monday

Volunteers who spoke at a November 6 meeting to join the ad hoc committee for a Northwest family counseling center will gather at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Logan Square YMCA 3600 Fullerton to plan future activities. Residents of the Northwest Side and local groups are invited.

Operation Quick Tow to Keep Streets Clear

West Northwest Side police districts and ward yards vow to clear streets when snow reaches one inch. Two new city ordinances enforce no parked cars on arterial snow routes and alternate side parking 3 to 7 am Monday through Saturday. Police will warn residents via radio and TV and street salters will operate at snowfall onset.

Renewal funds aid area Catholic highs and parishes

The Project Renewal pledge drive of the Chicago archdiocese distributes funds to schools parishes and organizations. As of November 1 pledges totaled 42.97 million with 9.39 million paid or collected and 4.98 million already expended or committed to education parish and other renewal projects.

Geib Inc Purchases North Building for Expansion

Geib Inc, maker of musical instrument cases, buys the five story North Building at 3700 North with 90,000 square feet in expansion move. Headquarters will shift to the new site by January 1 while Central Park plant remains active. Renovations include dock modernization and parking expansion after purchasing from American Decal and Manufacturing Co for an undisclosed price.
