Humboldt County Sees Mixed Iowa PIK Impact Highs Lows

Humboldt County faces about four point eight million dollars of Iowa’s estimated three hundred million agribusiness loss from the new Payment in Kind program with corn farmers sharing in nine hundred twenty million in anticipated farm income gains. Extension director Norman Moklestad notes some savings may flow back into the economy via conservation work and fertilizer purchases. ISU economist Daniel Otto predicts broader statewide losses while outlining the multiplier effect and differences between income gains and full agribusiness activity. Humboldt idles sixty three thousand one hundred acres, about forty five percent of the county corn base, reducing crop input spend by thirty percent but lowering total agribusiness sales by eleven percent.
