J. W. Pamplin reports from Camp Grange I Thomas Chickamauga Park July 25 1898. Troops are trained and housed in tents with new uniforms and gear while awaiting transfer to the front. Recruitment, hospital delays, and weather shape daily life as regiments anticipate orders and wait for movement toward Porto Rico and further duty.
The First United States Cavalry, largely Iowa men, earned the nickname The Iowa Cavalry. About 600 of the 16 000 participants in the two day siege at Santiago hailed from Iowa, exceeding the state's quota. Captain Adams previously ran an Iowa recruiting station, and Iowa farms supplied many recruits for the regiment.
The Des Moines Register urges increasing military pay for Civil War veterans who fought for the Union. It argues current pensions were inadequate under depreciated currency and calls for higher monthly sums to reflect service and sacrifice, emphasizing veterans' care for illness and injuries.
