Iowa Regiments Figure Prominently in Santiago Siege

The First United States Cavalry, largely Iowa men, earned the nickname The Iowa Cavalry. About 600 of the 16 000 participants in the two day siege at Santiago hailed from Iowa, exceeding the state's quota. Captain Adams previously ran an Iowa recruiting station, and Iowa farms supplied many recruits for the regiment.

United States Army Volunteers Promise Strong, Ready Force

The regular army accepted volunteers as officers and medical examiners, securing a high class of men. Of 216,400 authorized, 212,000 have shipped, nearly all fully equipped.
