Destructive Sioux City Fire Levels Mass. Block Complex
A devastating blaze in Sioux City Iowa destroyed the Pelletier and surrounding buildings in the Massachusetts block at Fourth and Jackson Streets. Estimated losses exceed 3 million dollars with one confirmed death and about seventy five residents displaced. Fire destroyed seven story Toy building and adjacent properties as winds fanned the flames. Fire escapes saved some, but many occupants fled through smoke and heat while police aided shelter efforts. The blaze started in a basement toy engine cave used for a Santa Claus display and spread rapidly through unprotected, inflammable goods. Insurance covered most of two thirds of losses.

First Inauguration of President to Capitol March 4
The piece notes the unique event of a President in office undergoing a first inauguration at the Capitol on March 4. It contrasts this with prior two term presidents who rode to the ceremony with an outgoing chief executive, and explains the historical rarity and ceremonial implications of Roosevelt’s upcoming inaugural. It references broader context on wealth, agriculture, and political composition.
