The Christmas Promise in Jepthy Wise Tale
This fragment recounts a rural tale where Paley bargains for Prudence with Jepthy Wise. Old Beelzebub haunts the plot as payment in white sheep pelts leads to Jepthy’s betrothal of Prudence to Paley on Christmas. The tale ends with the wedding and Jepthy’s unexpected twist.
