Russian warship Petropavlovsk struck a mine in the roadstead while going out to meet the Japanese fleet at Port Arthur. The vessel heeled and sank with almost her entire crew lost, including Vice Admiral Makaroff. Only four officers survived, among them Grand Duke Cyril.
The Imperial Navy reports the battleship Petropavlovsk struck a mine at Port Arthur harbor and sank with most of its crew. Grand Duke Cyril survived with minor injuries, while Captain Jakoviett and many officers were severely wounded or lost. Rear Admiral Grigorovitch ordered prayers and a state service as news spread through St. Petersburg.
