Gompers Cleared as Labor Convention Votes Down Socialist Proposals

At the American Federation of Labor gathering in New Orleans the Gompers investigation found no evidence of infidelity to the union, seven socialist resolutions were defeated, and reconciliation sought between rival carpenters and other unions. Contested Amendment Debate in Convention Ends in Vote

Martyrs to Science: Twelve Men to Undergo Food Experiments

Washington November 20. W J Wiley chief of the bureau of chemistry will supervise a two week trial on twelve government employees to test physiological effects of meats pretreated with chemicals. Six volunteers will eat untreated meat and vegetables while the other six receive chemically treated fare. Participants will weigh before each meal and record daily observations as diet regimens switch.

Food for Cadets in Experiments Promised

Prof Wiley states meat feed will aid cadets during experiments. The best food plan will supply meals to the boys at no cost for a year or more. Fare will be modest, above average boarding house levels, avoiding lavish dishes and excess meat.

Report of Investigating Committee On Department Work

Washington November 20 STATIEIAN Hyde of the department of ferloniture was advised the report of the committee that investigated Kin division and those of the census bureau would be issued today to Cincinnati and mailed to him. Hyde expects to receive the copy tomorrow and a promised statement from Mr Mintle soon after. The statement will explain alleged discrepancies between his figures and those of the census bureau and may contain other items of interest in the crap statietion controversy. The committee included representatives from various states and Murray of Cincinnati as secretary.

President to Begin Work on Message After Tour

Washington reports the president will meet with Republican leaders next week to gather views for his forthcoming message. He is expected to oppose trusts in the plan and urge Congress to unite on regulation of monopolies. Attorney General Knox is said to be drafting an administration measure for early presentation.

Ashman Convicted in Lyons Job Cases tally ten years

In district court Ashman received ten years for burglary and ten more for theft linked to the Lyons operation. The Wickman case also yielded ten years for burglary, while Hickman’s theft charge was continued due to indictment defects. Prosecutors note a gang involved in multiple robberies and safe cracking in Port Arthur and other cities. The jury completed four indictments totaling twenty seven felonies and misdemeanors.
