Reports from Fort de Keane describe a violent uprising near Saint Pierre Ville with heavy casualties. The river valley sugar works were set ablaze as troops guard the treasury and warehouse while relief ships bring survivors and aid. Local towns suffer extensive damage and evacuations continue.
Reports detail a catastrophic volcanic outbreak affecting Martinique and St Vincent. Up to 500 people feared dead at St Vincent with many bodies recovered, homes destroyed, and widespread distress. Relief ships and military vessels head to the islands with supplies and doctors as rescue efforts continue.
Washington officials rely on newspaper reports for late information from the West Indies on the Sr. Pierre situation. The Coast Assistant will depart for Martinique tonight to obtain updates and report back to the department as soon as possible.
From Fort de France Martinique a naval commander reports St Pierre reduced to a smoking ruin with many buried victims. Three other communities are destroyed as northeastern Martinique lies waste with refugees and ongoing fires and tremors from Mont Pelou.
Reports from Kingston Roy Kingston Island of St Vincent detail a volcanic outbreak near Soufriere. A crater explosion sent steam and ash eight miles high, forcing Walliton and Richmond Valley residents to flee to Chateau Belair. Dozens are reported dead or missing as districts are cut off and aid is dispatched.
Captain Freeman of the British steamer Roddam recalls the May volcanic eruption at St Terre, Martinique. The Heddon crew battled flames, smoke, and exploding lava, with ten dead and several wounded among twenty three aboard. survivors were rescued by authorities while the town burned.
Reports from Paris on the Martinique disaster claim outward events do not exaggerate the tragedy. Citizens crowded cafes and amusements when the catastrophe struck, wiping out a major colony and leaving government buildings daubed with rubble. The Temps editorial notes a week of shocks from rail accidents to elections that may dull public concern.
