Washington dispatch reports the House Foreign Relations Committee split along party lines over extending exclusion laws. Democrats press to force action on the Chinese exclusion bill while Republicans, allied with capitalists, prefer delaying or defeating it, amid strong national sentiment for exclusion.
Washington report says Representative John Sheppard, ill for three weeks, is considerably worse tonight. Friends were not allowed to see him as his condition is described as very serious by medical staff.
The Arkansas commission plans a state World’s Fair building at the St Louis fair grounds with architect F W J Hart submitting plans to Director of Works Taylor. Site chosen, work to commence, marking the first state building to be erected.
Washington reports Texas manufacturing stats from a new census bulletin. It lists nine tables covering state totals, city contributions including Houston and Dallas, and leading industries for 1900. The report notes a capital of 3.4 million dollars and gross product value of 110 million with net value of 84 million after material costs.
Senator Hanna and Postmaster General Payne met with the president to discuss Southern post office appointments. Senator Tanta, chairman of the Republican National Committee, oversees Southern Republicans in districts with Democratic congressional representation.
March 8. Mr. F. A. Ward, three miles south of Luling in Guadalupe County, lost a large barn and contents to fire. The blaze caused about 500 dollars in damage with no insurance noted.
In Washington March Mr Heinrich Muntler a Grange Free Star diplomat spoke with Secretary Hay about concentration camps in South Africa. Dr Mueller also pressed the issue but Hay offered sympathy without promising U.S. policy change.
Washington reports a plan to send a commission to Cuba to study conditions before action, delaying any vote for a year. The president meets with Speaker Henderson and others on sugar and reciprocity, denying efforts to corner Congress and hinting at a special message.
Washington reports the War Department plans a rapid return of all Philippine regiments totaling about 43 500 men. Transports will move 5740 men by April 9 and 11 900 by May 75. General Chaffee will command a standing force of 32009 in the United States.
A Chicago editorial says Gov Yates and others raised a relief fund for reconcentrados in South Africa and Rev Herman W Thomas and wife agreed to supervise distributions. The story claims Hay refused to issue passports citing Roosevelt objections. Burleson introduced a resolution to force floor discussion and seek a statement from Secretary Hay. The report adds the Philippine tariff bill has been signed by the president.
Washington report shows the final census bill section 4 contradicts the house's intent to place all census office employees in the classified service. Rep. Lima sought to raise the matter. Speaker prevented further remarks as Mr Sims was blocked. A move to fix the deception by an appropriation bill is anticipated.
Texas lawmakers show mixed views on the Kilberg versus Burns contest for the Southern district judgeship. Most are indifferent while some back Kilberg or Burns, with Representative Kleberg supporting his relative Kilberg and Representative Burgees backing Burns. Representative Hall favors Kilberg.
Washington and East Texas expect fair conditions Sunday and Monday with light to fresh southerly winds. Oklahoma and Indian Territory also forecast fair weather the same days with winds shifting from south to west.
