President Roosevelt hosted his first New Year reception with dignitaries and soldiers present. General Schley was absent and the event drew mixed reactions from Congressmen and guests amid claims of chilly cordiality and muted greetings.
President Roosevelt and Mrs. Roosevelt hosted a grand New Year's reception with diplomats from Britain France Germany Russia and many other nations. The event featured formal arrivals in uniform, elaborate gowns and diamonds, and extended greetings from the president to officials including Justices cabinet members and military leaders.
Secretary Hay hosted the diplomatic corps after the White House reception. Cabinet members Knox Hitchcork Long and Wilson and other officials held open houses on their streets, as La Fayette Square and surrounding homes welcomed the guests. The city observed a holiday with salutes and closing departments.
Colonel F. E. Peters of Calvert and Herbert Godwich of Houston arrived in Washington to press a 60000 appropriation, with 20000 available immediately, to fund experiments against boll weevil in Texas and other cotton states. They report support from leaders in Houston New Orleans Galveston and nearby regions, with assurances from Bosey Fary Wilson that the Agriculture Department will aid efforts.
A Baltimore and Ohio through passenger train jumped the track near Glencoe Pa on January 1 killing two men and injuring seventeen, five seriously. Names of dead include John Couldins and McKune of Connellsville. injured include officials and workers from Washington, D C and several states. Rescue teams rushed to Meyersey after gas tanks ignited, threatening a larger disaster.
