Brooklyn adjuster William Place returns home to find his wife attempting to kill his stepdaughter and then herself. She is said to have armed herself with a small axe and struck Place on the forehead and cheek, leaving him unconscious as the assailant fled to a locked room.
High pressure centers over the South Atlantic States with strong readings at Jacksonville and Atlanta. A trough extends from Northwestern Texas to Eastern Nebraska, unsettled conditions west of the Mississippi and clear to the east. No significant rainfall tonight. Observations taken at 8 pm standard time note generally fair weather in the north with cooler conditions, chance of showers Tuesday morning in Texas, and unsettled or threatening weather across the plains and mountains with variable winds and possible rain.
A small cotton fire near Livingston Texas was caused by sparks from engine No 12 as it passed about 10 o clock. One bale partly burned and another slightly scorched, with no major damage due to rain and quick extinguishing after the alarm. Insurgents dynamited a Havana bound train between Inte and San Vivento in Santiago de Cuba. A passenger car and a cattle car were destroyed. Five passengers were killed and twenty seven wounded. Insurgents attacked again but were repulsed by escort fire until reinforcements arrived.
