General Lawton Killed Leading Charge at San Mateo

Manila December 19 General Henry W Lawton was shot and killed at San Mateo while leading a march to seize the town from insurgents. He rode at the head of the advance under rain and heavy fire, fell after a brief struggle, and died instantly. The attack continued as his troops carried the general’s body from the field. Colonel Lockett assumed command.

President mourns General Lawton death dispatched from White House
