Washington reports heightened Chinese crisis with talks of a stand near Tung Chow and Pekin. Officials withhold dispatch contents while Minister Conger and Consuls warn of possible hazardous moves as Allied forces advance and a cabinet meeting is planned.
Arkansas Attorney General Jefferson Davis filed suit in county court against Independence Ice Company Little Rock Ice Company Lythe Rock Ice Company and North Little Rock Ice Company alleging they formed an ice trust to fix prices for fee in Little Rock. Damages of 5000 sought as part of the action and the attorney general plans to pursue further proof with assistants.
Special to The Post reports Texans registered at New York hotels on August 15. Listings include Miss Bostrau and Miss Matuire in St Denis, and guests at Beaumont Colonnial and Grand Union among others. Names cover Dallas, Galveston, Terrell, Winnshord, Wonco, and Wonco guests with venues including Park Avenue and Vendome.
A dated dispatch from Chee Foo reports Consul Rapsdale receiving a cipher batch from Minister Con r Ik. The Chinese government is trying to force residents to leave Pekin, a move described as increasingly critical as reinforcements arrive.
Special to The Post of Washington reports strong belief in Washington that the Pekin crisis has peaked. Ministers' fate may be sealed as allied forces reach gates under a truce and China’s refusal to enter Pekin threatens war. Dispatch from Shanghai warns resistance and heavy fighting near Pekin.
Telegraphs from Taku and Ho Bi Les reach the British admiralty describing large casualties as Chinese forces engage. Rear Admiral Bruce reports a general at Ho Bi Les forwarding grim casualty figures and troop movements amid escalating hostilities.
Paris reports from Pokin dated August 1 describe Li Ming Ching negotiating telegraphically while Chinese forces close in on the French legation. The envoy cites evacuation risks, fears of being overrun, and a precarious supply situation with provisions for only fourteen days as imperial troops fire intermittently.
The British Foreign Office forwards Sir Claude MacDonald’s August telegrams from Pekin noting relief progress and urging cheer. The MacDonald message to the Daily Telegraph, dated August 6, warns of possible massacre if relief fails and mentions violent offers from the Chinese court. A Washington dispatch from Consul General Goodnow at Shanghai is also reported but its contents are withheld.
A August dispatch from Tien Tain reports Allied forces under Gen Tune Fa Stan captured Ho si Wu after a clash with troops retreating from Pao-Tinpe. Cavalry pursued the enemy to prevent a stand, and reports from Pekin note Prince Tunp ly ordered executions of those aiding foreigners.
In Pekin on August 16 the Chinese minister, also overndizect to Spain, met Conger and the gable Dlonated from the Spanish minister. A note was forwarded to Madrid, and the British government received another message from Sir Claude MacDonald. The ministers at Pekin are said to have addressed identical notes to their governments.
London records note the Chinese minister telling the British office that the, forelam legations at Pukia were safe on Monday August 1.
A cablegram from Washington reports Captain William L. Murphy of the Thirty-ninth United States Volunteer Infantry killed near Tinauan. Born in Iowa, Murphy was appointed from that state to the military academy. He served in the Santiago campaign during the Spanish-American War and was recommended for bravery at the Battle of San Juan Hill.
General Mac Arthur reports to the War Department on troop health in the Philippines. Sick in hospitals total 863, in quarters 1261, with 5129 in other cases, equating to 47 percent of the entire army in the archipelago.
Indianapolis August 18 The Liberty Congress of the National Anti Imperialist League drew a small crowd as delegates gathered for the final day. George Boutwell former governor of Massachusetts and secretary of the treasury urged adherence to republican principles while pledging support for William Jennings Bryan.
