Oats on fallow and stubble in Australian trials
A Hickory article in Australasian reviews oats on fallow and stubble. Wimmera trials in 1906 08 and 1920 21 at Werribee Farm compared bare fallow with stubble, using 14 bushels of seed per acre and 1 cwt of super or 1 ewe per acre. Fallowed plots yielded 3 tons 1 cwt per acre for hay on stubble ploughed land, with net profits of £3 1s per acre fallow and £10 4s on stubble. Fallows produced 24 bushels per acre. stubble yielded fewer. The findings spurred adoption, despite objections about harvest timing and wheat competition. The piece also discusses sheep feeding, fodder storage, and the rise of Sudan grass and other fodders for stock in drought-prone districts.
