Graphic inquest testimony from nearly 30 passengers traced a front tyre blowout on an Ansett bus on the Western Highway. Witnesses described the bus leaving the road, uprooting a tree, and careening 24 yards before halting. Driver and tyre expert reviews suggested possible tire failure. authorities debated employer liability for speeding at instruction.
Coroners in Ballarat examined witness estimates placing the vehicle at 30 to 40 mph before a tyre burst caused loss of control. Statements described the bus travelling near 40 mph with witnesses noting the speed as a key factor, while questions remained about negligence and road surface preservation.
A report notes three separate occasions on which deterrent employees were convicted for driving at speeds exceeding what the Act allows. The findings suggest renewed scrutiny of enforcement standards and compliance within the department.
