Hope Police investigated two crashes on Thursday. James W. Cobb of Nashville was charged with yielding the right of way after colliding with Harold V. Vickers of Unice Louisiana on Highway 4, causing heavy damage and minor injuries to Vickers. A second crash at 14th and South Main involved Julius McCauley of Hope rear ending Roger D. Carl of Plattsburg Missouri. no charges filed and minor damage reported. Weather forecast calls for partly cloudy warm conditions with possible thunderstorms, windy conditions, and cooler temperatures northwest Saturday.
The Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology orders Hudson Foods Inc. in Hempstead County to upgrade water and air pollution controls within two to four weeks after inspections showed noncompliant wastewater treatment discharge. Acting director Hobby Voss issues the directive and sets hearings by October 7 with a written report due by October 12 detailing actions taken to comply.

A chlorine gas leak from a water treatment plant in Philadelphia hospitalized about 190 people and forced evacuations across a three block area. Police said four chlorine cylinders were capped and residents were allowed to return once the area was deemed safe.
