The Hope Star reports a weak cold front entering Arkansas with little effect, followed by a high pressure system bringing cool dry air. Extended outlook shows fair, dry weather with highs near 80 and lows in the 50s. AP reports Republican Gov. Ronald Reagan of California arrives in Little Rock to campaign for Judy Petty against Democrat Wilbur D Mills. Reagan, on an eight state five day tour, previously spoke in Amarillo Texas for Rep. Bob Price. Petty praises Reagan’s tax reform record and vows to fight inflation and wasteful spending.
All Around Town notes Galen May won 200 gallons of gasoline in a GOP booth drawing at the Third District Livestock Show. Phil Ross will portray Jason’s slave in Medea at Southern State College October 10-12 with Ellen Smart as Medea. Also listed are military officers at the Naval War College and their studies, along with Hope Boosters Club meeting details and a reminder to be courteous drivers.
U S diplomat Barbara Hutchison and five others are trapped inside the Venezuelan Consulate in Santo Domingo by six leftist guerrillas. The gunmen demand $1 million and safe passage to Cuba or Mexico for themselves and 37 Dominican prisoners. Conditions inside rise to 90 to 95 degrees as electricity and water are cut off. A hostage escaped Friday. Archbishop Polatico says a negotiating commission was requested but not agreed to. The Dominican government says it has primary responsibility and seeks a peaceful solution.
Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Manning described former President Richard Nixon as alive and in excellent spirits after visiting him in a Long Beach hospital weekend. Manning, who has known Nixon since 1946, noted no pain and good condition while Nixon, 61, treated for phlebitis and a blood clot, received visits from his wife Pat and daughter Tricia Cox.
In Buenos Aires an explosion beneath a Chilean supporter of late President Allende and his wife killed them both. Police said this raised the death toll from right and left wing terrorism to at least 27 in two weeks, with no immediate claim of responsibility. The couple had fled Chile across the Andes after the military coup a year earlier.
