State Dept Warns U S May Be Forced to Expand the War Outside Viet Nam
In Tokyo a top State Department official warned North Vietnam and China against heightened pressure on South Vietnam. William P. Bundy said expansion of the war could be forced upon the U S by Soviet backed infiltration, without detailing how. A U S source said bombing bases in North Vietnam or Laos had been considered. Bundy stressed U S aims to pressure Hanoi rather than overthrow its government, warning that a South Vietnamese fall risked wider Southeast Asian turmoil. China warned the U S to halt further escalation, promising dire consequences if the war widened. In Saigon troops faced new protests after killings in Qui Nhon as rioters attacked the former Ngo Dinh Diem regime’s allies.
