A high pressure ridge extending from Wisconsin into Arkansas brings clear skies and cool temps. Mississippi Valley reports mostly clear conditions with record low 40 degrees in Fort Smith, 35 at Fayetteville, and 42 at another site.
Hope Star reports Arkansas weather with highs in the 60s to 70s and nightly lows in the 40s across counties including Little Rock Pine Bluff Texarkana Jonesboro and Memphis. It notes a dry 24 hour period and a high pressure forecast bringing southerly winds and a warming trend through Saturday.
Atlanta article from AP notes 158 new St Louis encephalitis cases reported to the CDC in the past week. Illinois leads with 76 new, followed by Indiana 22, Mississippi 20, Tennessee 16, Alabama 12, and scattered cases elsewhere. Totals reach 388 confirmed and 427 suspected. about 30 deaths.
Robert Bernard Considine, noted Hearst columnist and war correspondent, died of a stroke at 68 in New York. He rose under William Randolph Hearst Sr. began in 1937, wrote On the Line, covered World War I and Korea, produced TV and film scripts, and won Overseas Press Club awards for the Khrushchev interview and papal death coverage. He is survived by his wife Millie and four children. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Magnolia Polled Hereford Association will award top trophies Saturday at the fairgrounds. A record number of Soil Conservation Service staff were recognized at the agency’s annual honor awards in Little Rock. Jerry S. Wright received a Certificate of Merit for special achievement at the Hope field office and Southwest Arkansas RC&D project coordination. Mrs. Wright has three and a half years as a clerk handling calls, reception, typing, and filing. Daniel G. Edwards, area engineer for Hope, earned a Certificate of Merit for conservation engineering on watershed and RC&D projects. Edwards, a graduate of the UofA Agricultural Engineering School, is noted for promoting conservation engineering locally.
The Commerce Department reports August exports exceeded imports by 1.035 billion, the seventh straight monthly surplus, lifting the year to date surplus to 7.4 billion. Oil imports rose while farm exports led gains in soybean, corn, tobacco, cotton, rice, and wheat, with autos and computers also contributing.
A San Francisco transcript shows Patricia Hearst, jailed on bank robbery and kidnapping charges, describing herself as a revolutionary feminist seeking bail freedom. The taped jailhouse talk with friend Patricia Tobin, recorded at San Mateo County jail, is part of court materials for mental competency review.
