Washington AP reports the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the nomination of Fowler Hamilton, a 530 year old New York lawyer, to head the United States foreign aid program in a move signaling leadership change and policy direction.

Westinghouse scientists announce a one-pound donut shaped supermagnet with the magnetic power of a conventional electromagnet. It weighs 20 tons and is the size of a car. Dr J K Hulm says it could aid electricity generation and distribution for peaceful nuclear uses and space propulsion. A new superconducting wire enables zero resistance below 450 degrees Fahrenheit, maintaining superconductivity despite magnetism.
Enrollments at Arkansas State in Jonesboro reach a new high of 13070 students as registration continues for another week. The figure marks an all time record for the college, with applicants still able to sign up.

Department store sales in the Federal Reserve District for the week ending Sept 16 were three percent below the same week in 1960. The St Louis drop of seven percent and Louisville down two percent offset three percent gains in Memphis, two percent in Little Rock, and nine percent in seven small cities, leaving district totals one percent below the 1960 comparable period.
Dowagiac Michigan AP March 1959 news item reports IRS Internal Revenue Service director Earl Mathis 52 may be transferred to a new post in the Midwest. He has served over 25 years and led the agency since July 3 1957.
Kennedy told leaders from both parties they would be contacted within 24 hours if the international situation requires action after Congress adjourns. Senate and House leaders Mansfield and Dirksen said emergency contact would cover all members except those abroad. Dirksen noted Eisenhower’s Chicago dinner comment on Kennedy’s criticism. the talk followed Kennedy’s breakfast before a trip to Hyannis Port.
