Diseases Linked to Smoking Highlight Alarming Risks
Dr Roger S Mitchell of the Webb Waring Institute, a division of the University of Colorado, told a Little Rock audience that chronic bronchitis and emphysema are closely tied to cigarette smoking. He noted evidence favors smoking as a major cause of chronic bronchitis over air pollution, but cautioned that proving a direct cause and effect is difficult. Emphysema is detectable only by lung tissue microscopy. the condition is described as a bodho pulmonary disease with alveolar walls breaking down. Mitchell linked the frequency and severity of chronic bronchitis to lung cancer, and urged smokers that it is not healthy.
