Suit Filed to Break Up Grocery Chain
Washington reports the U S government filed a civil anti trust suit to split the Atlantic and Pacific Food chain stores into seven retail chains. Attorney General J Howard Mc Grath said in New York federal court the case targets New York Great Atlantic Pacific Tea Co Inc and nine subsidiaries and two owners. The action seeks to separate manufacturing from buying and selling and to dissolve the Atlantic Commission Co. It would force sale of six of seven divisions, shrinking the chain from about 6000 stores to roughly 800. The suit calls A P a leading national food enterprise and accuses it of systematic discrimination.
