McGovern meets Bunker on Vietnamization views in Saigon
Senator George McGovern in Saigon for a three day visit says he disagrees with Ambassador Bunker that Vietnamization is proceeding well. He calls the Paris talks with Hanoi and Viet Cong negotiators unfinished and notes two conditions seen as essential for cease fire and POW release. McGovern criticizes the Oct 3 South Vietnamese election as uncompetitive. He plans to meet Thieu and discuss six hours of talks in Paris. He says American support should continue to sustain Thieu.
