London experts warn the Soviet navy has shifted from support to a self contained force. Twelve more ships passed through the Strait of Gibraltar bringing total Mediterranean Soviet vessels to about 44 surface and subsurface combat ships plus 26 support units. The US Sixth Fleet has around 50 ships, including two aircraft carriers. Analysts say Port Said and Alexandria anchorages place the fleet near Arab Israeli hotspots and the new buildup could deter Israeli actions and discourage Western intervention.
A warrant for the arrest of Tance Sweet Willie Watson, leader of Memphis based Invaders, is issued in Forrest City Ark for a disorderly conduct during a disturbance on August 26. Watson was beaten that night by a crowd of several hundred whites and four others including three white newsmen, suffering a broken elbow.
AP report from Saigon cites Washington orders suspending B52 raids over South Vietnam for up to 36 hours amid possible peace moves with Ho Chi Minh successors. Raids continued on the Ho Chi Minh trail in eastern Laos, with speculation about timing and political aims.
Advisers argued from Washington and Paris a brief halt in B52 operations was to deter continuation of military activity after the truce. The United States sought to determine if the Communists would honor the cease-fire and the 12 hour post armistice period, as stated by Ziegler and other aides.
