A cold front sweeps the upper Mississippi Valley and central Plains with gusts to 30 mph. Temperatures fall to the 40s behind the front while the lower Missouri Valley and west central Plains see seasonable 70s. Kiwanis notes good and bad news from Mitchell speaker
Kiwanis speaker Charles Mitchell district engineer of the Arkansas Highway Department shared good and bad news on Tuesday at Town and Country Restaurant. Main Street project should finish this year while Highway 29 South construction will not. Once 29 South advances to a point construction will begin on the next section southward. Mitchell described the department with about 4000 employees including 33 resident engineers across eight counties in the third district. A state highway film was shown. Kiwanis president Gordon Renshaw announced 642 plates served at the pancake supper last Friday and apologized for slow service. The club will improve lines. Trial set for sheriff in Harrison on tax fraud charges
Sheriff Billy Joe Holder of Searcy County faces a federal indictment charged with filing fraudulent income taxes. He is to be tried October 7 in Harrison after posting a $1,000 bond. The indictment cites 1969 income of 6148 vs 15838 and back taxes of 2243, plus 1970 income of 7931 vs 18602.
