Smoke Jumpers Fight Forest Fires From Air and Ground
In a remote forest area smoke jumpers from U S Forest Service begin aerial fire suppression. Since 1939 trials led to 1940s actual jumps saving acres of timber. About 390 jumpers work near forests with Park Service and BLM. Most fires from lightning. July to September peak. Rookies train two weeks and perform seven jumps.
