The Story of the Atom Part One
The radium atom acts like tiny atomic bombs in a thimbleful, exploding constantly and making radium dangerous to handle. Radium’s rarity and danger spurred scientists to seek radioactive forms of common elements to fight disease, including cancer. In 1919 Rutherford directed alpha beams at nitrogen, achieving artificial transmutation into hydrogen and oxygen.

Cracking the Atom and Early Nuclear Power
Chadwick and associates broke apart boron fluorine sodium aluminum and phosphorus to reveal that atom smashing uses enormous power. Nuclei require cracking to transmute elements with X-ray generators and high voltage. The Van de Graaff generator at MIT built by Robert J. Van de Graaff in 1932 and the first cyclotron by Ernest O. Lawrence in 1929 illustrate early devices enabling radioactive reactions.
