Nazi View of Ship Deal Is Non-Commital
Berlin officials interpret the 50 destroyers for eight bases swap as a signal Britain may be dissolving its empire. Nazi sources say the ships arrive too late to help Britain, while others see the 99 year lease as permanent US access. Rome and Washington commentaries note heightened risk to Europe and continental defense in response to the deal. Roosevelt frames the move as a major defense measure, with Jackson affirming there is no legal hurdle.
