Malii Vo Smit aged 61 was struck and killed Saturday night on highway 67 west inside the city limits. Henry McKoy 38 of Hobbs New Mexico drove the auto. police say he did not see the elderly woman. A charge was filed as officers reported the accident. The injured woman was rushed to a hospital but died.

Death toll on Labor Day may hit new record
Traffic fatalities across the nation rose during the three day Labor Day holiday period raising the prospect of a new record. The National Safety Council reported 384 deaths so far with more expected as vacationers return home. In addition 19 in boating mishaps 31 drownings and 61 miscellaneous fatalities brought the total to 495. If the 500 mark is reached it would exceed the 461 deaths recorded in 1951.

Manhunt for purse snatcher grips Hot Springs region
A manhunt is underway in western Arkansas for 26 year old David Taylor of Glenwood after a Malvern woman reported $45 stolen from her purse at a private club.
