Two Small Children Found Dead in Old Icebox

Two siblings Franklin Sherer aged five and Sandra two and a half were found smothered inside an ice box in a neighbor’s garage in St Paul Minnesota. Their parents Mr and Mrs Stanley Sherer had been caring for them as potential adoptees. Police were alerted when the boy’s tricycle was found in the neighboring garage and firefighters used oxygen in a futile rescue.

McMath Aims to Save Camp Chaffee from Closure

Governor McMath said he will take his protest directly to President Truman and Secretary of Defense Johnson to keep Camp Chaffee near Fort Smith open. He plans to contact both immediately and meet the President at upcoming national meetings. The military ordered Camp Chaffee’s closure next year.

Out-of-State Agency to Survey Roads in Arkansas

The Arkansas Legislative Council voted 23 to A to invite the Automotive Safety Foundation of Washington, D C to survey all state and county roads and city streets. The Foundation will conduct a year long study of highway needs and advise on long range planning and financing. Cost is about 30000, with half federally financed. Critics argued it shifts bond program responsibility and blamed higher taxes if implemented. Local business and oil groups opposed the plan amid concerns for low traffic road transfers and political fallout. A separate item reported a $20000 fire loss to Bullock Lumber in Eureka Springs destroying three buildings and lumber.
