Brooklyn Holdup Sparks Debate On Society And Law

Bruce Catton weighs the $427,000 Brooklyn heist as a sign of youth and restless energy in a nation with a long crime past. He argues crime reflects social vitality, not decay, comparing it to historic frontier bravado and noting government decline as a distant possibility yet warns against complacency. He discusses penal code ideas from Germany and the humane doubt about capital punishment, then shifts to American road safety with New Jersey’s white cross plan to deter reckless driving and recalls Ohio’s roadside crosses as a sobering warning.
