Deadly hurricane toll rises across New England coast

A week-old hurricane left at least 48 known dead and near 100 million dollars in damage as it slammed the northeastern seaboard. Emergency crews from PA, NJ and NY rushed to restore power for about 3 million residents while governors mobilized National Guard and civil defense workers to protect life and property amid widespread outages and evacuations.

New Hurricane Forms in the Atlantic Near Miami

A tropical storm with 60 to 85 mph squalls formed from an eastern wave in the Atlantic. At 9 am the center was about 675 miles east of Daytona Beach, moving north at 18 to 20 mph. Grandy Norton of the Miami Weather Bureau said it would drift northward slowly for 24 hours. Shipping in its path was advised to exercise caution as the disturbance develops.

Clow Training School in Hempstead County will open September 6 with a full schedule and new staff. Principal S. W. Williamson will lead math and science, H J Dawson handles vocational agriculture, J C Goddwin oversees home economics and grades seven and eight, M J White teaches social science and athletics, Edny Marie Smith covers science English and music, with Lile E Brown and Odessa White leading elementary grades. Blevins Public Schools to Open September 6

The Blevins public schools for white and negro students will open September 6 with buses on regular routes. White school buses will not arrive at school Monday September 6 at 1:00 p.m. and will run normally starting September 7. A full day program starts September 7 with an early faculty meeting September 1. Principal Wiley will announce the opening schedule for the training school.

McCarthy Contempt Charge Split In Senate Censure Probe

The Senate censure committee tentatively rejected a bid to junk charges that Joseph R McCarthy showed contempt for a 1952 Senate investigating committee. The panel focused on whether McCarthy refused to testify and whether the election subcommittee acted within authority.
