State Still Does Nothing to Preserve Its Timber Resources
Arkansas lags in timber conservation while federal and private efforts push fire prevention. The Union Sawmill Company at Huttig and its forestlands across Arkansas and Louisiana show fires drop from 445 to 122 after eight years of forester-led campaigns, placards, and public lectures. Three steel watchtowers, including a 112 foot Arkansas tower, monitor 50 to 50 miles across to Monroe Louisiana and El Dorado Smackover refineries, as fires threaten timber fertility and soil.

Timber company plans permanent operation after reforestation efforts
The firm runs lines to connect stations and fire watchmen during peak risk periods. It aims for permanent operation as timber is harvested and denuded areas are reseeded. Rapid growth of saplings suggests the company already mirrors forestry practices of national forests, growing a stick of timber for every one cut.
