The National Weather Service reports a cold front bringing rain across the state, moving eastward and reducing shower activity by Thursday. About 70 percent of Arkansas recorded rain this morning with over four inches at Remmel Dam.
The western half of the state stays under a warm moist southerly flow keeping temperatures mild through Thursday. Highs reach the low to mid 60s with lows in the mid 30s to mid 40s. Rain totals include 1.02 inches at the Experiment Station with 1% inches at Harrison and Pine Bluff, and around eight-tenths at Fayetteville and Fort Smith. Local stations report 50s to 60s for overnight lows and highs in the 60s across major cities.

Startled residents in East Tennessee reported a possible earth tremor around 6 p.m. Tuesday with differing official assessments. Knoxville observers described house-shaking sensations while Blount County and Concord residents reported brief tremors. seismograph offices in St Louis and Boulder could not confirm a quake. Oak Ridge instruments were off and weather bureau spokesmen offered competing explanations, including a sonic boom versus natural movement. The National Earthquake Service could not verify a tremor, and no large reading appeared on official monitors.

Former state Sen. Lee Bearden of Leachville and Everett Kennett were involved in a Tuesday morning altercation behind Leachville State Bank. Bearden, bank president, sustained lacerations a facial burn and two fractured ribs while Kennett was shot in the left abdomen with Bearden’s pistol. Both were hospitalized. no charges filed as investigation continued.

In Mena Arkansas two cars collided on rain slick U.S. 71 killing three people. Benjamin L Brown and Ester Brown both of near Mena were identified along with Arti Pope of Fort Smith as the victims. The crash occurred as Browns car made a left turn into an intersection with limited visibility due to a hill crest.
