Meany Hasn’t Received Nixon Letter
AFL-CIO chief George Meany has not received President Nixon’s wage restraint letter, with a spokesman saying they waited and would not respond without receipt. The White House said letters were mailed to 2,200 labor and business leaders over the weekend and Monday, while Meany’s camp noted possible mail delays. Nixon invited the 31-member AFL CIO Executive Council to the White House next Wednesday, a move Meany reportedly was not told the reason for. Inflation data show September costs rising five-tenths of a percent and a 5.9 percent annual rate, the worst in about two decades, fueling the wage price debate between Nixon and labor leaders.
