GAO Finds Faults in Spare Parts War Cost In Asia
The General Accounting Office linked human errors and faulty electronic calculators to a multimillion dollar excess cost of military aid to the Far East. Investigators traced almost half a billion dollars in spare parts stockpiled in Asian warehouses and at Japan's Army depot. The depot reported unrecorded material valued at 88 million dollars in its first complete stock inventory.

GAO reports overcounting bulk items in military aid logs
The GAO found a pattern where the system credited 111,146 items as issued when only 46 were documented. In another case the count showed 111,129 items to foreign countries though the actual figure was 129. Replacements for unissued items were ordered at 77,990 dollars. The accumulating stacks caused shortages in other places, harming the aid program.
