Forest Fire Near Jamestown Contained After Week of Work
Forester Ten Matlock reported that a large forest fire south of Jamestown is contained if winds stay low. About 140 volunteers have fought it since Monday, scorching roughly 3200 acres of mainly young pine, with 1000 acres owned by the State Game and Fish Commission and the rest by private owners. The blaze threatened homes, destroyed a firefighter’s automobile, and its cause remains undetermined.

Vote Fraud Case Set for Trial in Hazen Arkansas
Trials for seven Hazen residents indicted on charges tied to alleged irregularities in elections last year are slated for late October and early November. Phillip Smith faces Oct 30, with Hartlieb, Boyd and Gray set for Oct 31 for false certification in the Aug 9 Democratic primary. Brown, Van Houten, and Sims are scheduled for Nov 2 for permitting fraudulent voting in the Nov 1960 general election. Three others indicted in March have not been set. The probe grew from a bitter Democratic primary for state senator between Charles F. George and Jerry Screeton.

Bodies of Men Are Recovered in Plane Crash
In Mena Arkansas two men from Red Oak are confirmed dead after a light plane wreck on Blackfoot Mountain on October 1. The aircraft, owned by Gerald E. Anderson, was located by hunter Bill Little. the missing pilot and passenger were identified as John B. Carter, 41, and Chet Yeager, 50. A $2,500 reward had been offered for information on the plane’s whereabouts.
