Military families face poverty amid low base pay and welfare gap
A Pentagon review finds about 200,000 military families may qualify for federal aid while Defense facilities ban food stamps in commissaries. An airman near McGuire Air Force Base and a Georgia nurse mother with eight children illustrate struggles with $865 monthly pay, $116 rent, and $400 needed monthly. Welfare varies by state, with New Jersey and Burlington County aiding some families, while others rely on Army Emergency Relief and Red Cross loans. Officials call the system a form of involuntary servitude, noting housing gaps and rising married enlistments since 1965 strain budgets.
