Baptist Budget Approved by Foreign Missions Board

The Southern Baptist Church's Board of Foreign Missions approved a record $20,427,907 budget for 1963. The board elected Dr. Homer G. Lindsey of Jacksonville, Florida, as chairman replacing Dr. L. Howard Jenkins of Richmond, who had held the post for 30 years.

Harvesting in State Favorable

LITTLE ROCK AP Clear skies and mild temperatures across Arkansas aided harvest of crops last week. About 45 percent of cotton harvested with good yields and more machine picking, though gin turnout was low from dry weather. Rice losses reduced by dry week with about two thirds harvested. Soybeans minimally harvested but combining should rise this week.

Arkansas Chicks Placed and Shipped In Week

Arkansas producers started 3,990,000 broiler chicks in the week of Oct 6, a nine percent rise from the prior week. Of the total placements 3,502,000 were hatched in Arkansas and 488,000 came from other states. There were 174,000 chicks shipped from the state and 5,219,000 eggs were set, nine percent below the previous week.

Spa Fish Festival Competition Starts

Fishermen from 18 states Mexico and Canada gather in Hot Springs for the first annual Mr and Mrs World Series of Sport Fishing. Thirty couples entered will be guests of the city with rooms meals boats and motors furnished. Contestants may fish in areas of their choice in 52000 acres of waters around Hot Springs National Park using artificial lures.

Crosshow Tourney Set for Governors Hill Near Huntsville

The National Crosshow Tournament is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Governors Hill near Huntsville Arkansas. Organizers urge fans and participants to arrive early for registration and warmup events. Governors Hill hosts teams from several regions competing for national honors and prize money.

Protests Over Detention of U S Envoy Assistant

The United States formally protested to the Soviet Foreign Ministry after Cmdr. Raymond Smith was detained and manhandled in a Leningrad park. Moscow expelled the officer after questioning, accusing espionage. The U S Embassy denied improper conduct, saying Smith carried a camera binoculars and a tape recorder but did not display them. the map found was a standard transit map.

Scenic Drive Added to Arkansas Highways Plan

The Arkansas Highway Commission added a 16 mile segment of a proposed scenic drive from Mena to Talihina Oklahoma to the state highway system. The 55 mile road is expected to cost about 7 million dollars with construction funding to come from the federal government pending Congress approval. The Arkansas portion will run from Mena over Rich Mountain through Queen Wilhelmina State Park.

Reds Push for Three-Man UN Secretariat Board

In the General Assembly Budgetary Committee the Soviet Union urged replacing the UN secretary general with a three member board, arguing blocs should have equal secretariat representation. The US dismissed the plan as dangerous to the UN’s integrity and staff directives. The exchange came amid reviews of UN finances and administration.

Dinner Planned for Ex Arkansans in Little Rock

Forty six ex Arkansans from commerce finance industry and government returned to Arkansas to view change. They will attend a dinner in Little Rock then visit Conway and Winrock Farm Friday before Hot Springs. The event aims to spread a current Arkansas picture to guests. The Board of Education voted to participate in a Civil Defense program by sending staff to training and class sessions state wide. The sale of an adult education program moves forward with Harmon purchasing KAJI from Helmer Inc for 75 000 and 105 000 in federal funds.
