A five member committee named by the Arkansas Judicial Council will study a proposal to elect state Supreme Court, circuit, and chancery judges nonpartisan. Arkansas Supreme Court Reverses Two Convictions

The Arkansas Supreme Court reversed criminal convictions in two cases over trial errors. In Crittenden County, Robert L. Swanson was convicted of burglary and sentenced to 19 years after improper evidence of another crime was admitted. In Jefferson County, Leona James, Arthur Byrd, and Henry Strickland had robbery convictions reversed due to improper use of confessions in a joint trial.

Court Orders Quick Ruling in Rape Case

The Arkansas Supreme Court directed Conway Circuit Judge Russell C. Roberts to quickly rule on a motion for a new trial for Eugene Lamb and Frankie J. Taylor, who were acquitted in May of a first degree rape charge in Conway County Circuit Court. Prosecutor Alex G. Streett petitioned on September 20 to direct a judgment of acquittal and address the motion.
