In Hempstead circuit court on Monday a jury acquitted Jack Walker of murder while Lonzo Jackson pleaded guilty in a Fulton boxcar murder, receiving life imprisonment. The docket cleared to Thursday for Mel Larey’s murder trial moved on venue, with several co defendant cases continued and no court Tuesday or Wednesday.

W R Briggs 71 a farmer was shot to death near his home Tuesday by Monroe Patrick, also a farmer, who surrendered to officers claiming self defense after a quarrel. In Moscow the Oral Control Committee of the Communist Party expelled 20 members who advocated dissolving collective state farms.
NEW YORK. Speaker John N. Garner, Democratic vice presidential candidate, said there is a distinct possibility of modifying the Volstead act to bring back beer before March 4. He predicted legislation will be considered when Congress meets in December, driven by Democratic platform demands and congressmen statements.

A fourteen year old boy, George Light, sought adventure by attempting to board a freight train in Fort Worth. He stumbled as the train moved, was run over, and died. He was returned to a mother who had just buried her husband twelve hours earlier, creating a double burden of grief.
Washington reports that damp cool days extend sound travel. The Bureau of Standards says sound carries farther and is absorbed less when air is moist and cool, while dry hot air dampens and absorbs sound more.

DEWITY Ark Helen Spence the 19 year old girl who shot and killed Jack Worls in the courtroom where he was on trial for the murder of her father Cicero Spence in January 1931 was sentenced Monday to two years in prison. Her term will be served at the state farm for women at Jacksonville. Miss Spence was tried for the murder in March 1931 and sentenced to five years but she appealed the case and it was remanded for retrial by the Arkansas Supreme Court. Her defense at that time was insanity. Monday she pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter and was sentenced by Judge W J Waggoner. She smiled while she was being sentenced and said afterward that she was glad to get out of jail and begin serving a sentence. Miss Spence has been held in jail here since last February in connection with the killing of Jim Bobots Greek restaurant owner here who was found shot to death in his parked automobile about three miles east of DeWitt. The Grand Jury is investigating that case at this session. Miss Spence who is a small pretty brunette locked charming in the courtroom. She was wearing a red dress and black coat and hat. Her appearance was a contrast to that of a year ago at her last trial. At her first trial when her defense was insanity her expression never changed. Monday her eyes and hands were very expressive.
Chicago report states Sewell Avery Jr son of Montgomery Ward & Co chairman was found dead in his apartment by gas asphyxiation in the library. Authorities say the fire-log released gas as the cause.
