Obituary notices for Lizzie Jones and Pauline Watts

Mrs. Lizzie Matlock Jones of Delight died Sunday. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Harrison Chapel Baptist Church with burial in Harrison Chapel Cemetery. Survives include two sons Louis and Vernel Jones and three daughters. Mrs Pauline Jackson Watts of Texarkana died Thursday in a nursing home at 83. She left a son, a daughter, a sister, five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Funeral 10 a.m. Saturday at Texarkana Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Banquet honors area young farmers in Hempstead County

New mail program begins here Saturday

The United States Postal Service first class mail service improvement program will go into effect at Hopt Post Office on October 11. Under the program, first class mail will receive service that is equal to or better than airmail. The major new service step will extend to all first class mail weighing 13 ounces or less. Under the new program, there no longer will be an advantage in purchasing airmail postage for domestic delivery. Pricity mail (now starting at weight in excess of 13 ounces) which includes air parcel service and international airmail are unaffected by the improvement program and continue in their present form, the postmaster said. Airmail stamps will be sold for use on priority and in ternational airmail. They can be used in various combinations with other stamps for first class mail. Customers can exchange airmail stamps, and stamped envelopes and cards at full postage value for ordinary stamps, stamped envelopes and cards. Stationery bearing airmail indicia will be allowed to be mailed at the first class rate. White top airmail collection boxes, now being used ex clusively for airmail, will be removed or converted to use for other purposes.

Area towns register for Physicians Fair

Civic leaders and institutions from 35 Arkansas towns and cities including Hope Nash ville Prescott DeQueen and Stephens have reserved space for the second annual Physicians Opportunity Fair to be held October 15 at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. The event, staged by the UofA College of Medicine, aims to display community attractions, hand out brochures, and meet resident physicians in training at University Hospital. The program features talks by Dr. Thomas Bruce and Dr. James L. Dennis, plus demonstrations on physician placement and NHS Corps recruitment. The fair opens for residents and spouses 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a prior 8:30 a.m. exhibit space assignment. The event is described as a dialogue opportunity, not a placement service.

Hope High Students Attend Henderson Workshop

About ten Hope High School students will join the annual High School Journalism Workshop at Henderson State University this Saturday. Speakers include Bill Sanders of the Milwaukee Journal syndication, Jimmy Jones of the Arkansas Gazette, Gordon Hale of Walsworth Publishing, Billie Francis of Dell and Sterling, and Dr. Jim Shuff, Henderson’s audiovisual director.

Pryor selects 15 for county government law change panel

Gov. Pryor named 15 officials from across Arkansas to a Special Committee on County Government to study needed state law changes after Amendment 55. The panel reports to the legislature by May 1 and includes county judges, sheriffs, clerks, treasurers, and mayors from multiple counties. A separate note from the National Automobile Club urges belt and hose checks and possible replacement every two years or 24,000 miles.
