Weak Jump Overcall Fails At Bridge

Oswald Jacoby and James Jacoby analyze a historical bridge hand where a weak jump overcall backfires. West's two spades pressure North, North bids three clubs, South settles in three no trump, leading king of spades. South ducks, then targets diamonds and clubs, gaining an overtrick despite East’s entries. If West had stayed quiet, South likely would not have captured the overtrick, yielding a better score for West.

Leaders See Adjournment This Week in Congress

Congressional leaders expect the 90th Congress to adjourn by week’s end barring a presidential derailment. The effort centers on key funding bills for HEW, Labor, defense, and foreign aid, with a $18.4 billion measure advancing in Senate action and a $101.7 million catchall in the House. A Senate-passed bill would permit presidential candidates to debate without equal time, while a compromise rifles and shotguns traffic bill is in play. Nuclear nonproliferation treaty unlikely to survive the rush to adjourn.
